What is the Tokyo Financial Award?
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) aims to become an "Innovation and Financial Hub in Asia" for realizing a sustainable society. To this end, the TMG is promoting initiatives to realize an advanced sustainable financial city and a city where globally active start-ups are created, taking advantage of the “Special Zones for Finance and Asset Management Business," designated in June 2024.
The Tokyo Financial Award is held to recognize initiatives that create innovation in the financial sector and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society through the power of finance.
1. Financial Innovation Category
Residents and corporations in Tokyo are invited to submit any dissatisfaction or requests they have regarding the financial services in Tokyo. The TMG will choose the theme to be resolved from these applications, and ask domestic and foreign financial companies offering relevant solutions to apply for.
2. Sustainability Category
Residents and corporations in Tokyo are invited to submit any requests or comments they have regarding Sustainable Finance. The TMG is looking for domestic and foreign companies that engage in a wide range of financial activities including, but not limited to investment, lending, etc., that contribute to the realization of a sustainable society and businesses that utilize sustainable finance（including a wide range of financing method such as VC investments, etc.） to implement initiatives contributing to the realization of a sustainable society.
In FY2025, the most outstanding businesses out of the applicants in each category will be selected and awarded at the Award Ceremony.
*Sustainable finance:
Sustainable finance is a framework for utilizing funds for the purpose of transitioning to a more sustainable society, by addressing environmental issues such as climate change, social issues such as human rights and poverty, and other widespread common global issues.
In sustainable finance, attention tends to focus on the environmental perspective, which is of general interest and easy to grasp the specifics of a company's efforts, and the social perspective, which includes improving diversity and human rights issues. However, governance is also an important aspect in promoting sustainable finance.
One of the most notable aspects of Sustainable Finance in recent years has been the expansion of "green finance," which is financing to improve energy efficiency, reduce waste emissions, and introduce renewable energies.

As one of the initiatives of the “Global Financial City: Tokyo” Vision, the "Tokyo Financial Award" aims to enhance the presence of Tokyo as a global financial city, thereby revitalizing the financial sector and improving convenience for the residents of Tokyo.
